Unofficial SNK vs CAPCOM for the C64/128 gets a pretty impressive update! [Stronger Edition]

We have some exciting news to share here on Indie Retro News! Thanks to Ethan Knight and Saberman for the heads-up via Facebook, we learned that Jon Eggelton and Gianluca Alberico have just released a remarkable update for their unofficial game ‘SNK vs CAPCOM’ on Commodore 64 and Commodore 128. This game leverages their developing fighting engine, RetroFighter. To go along with this hot update, we’ve included details about the changes and a video showcasing the game in action.

‘SNK vs CAPCOM’ is not just a collection of crossover games featuring characters from both Capcom and SNK. It includes fundamental attacks, throws, special moves, and combos, along with two levels of super moves, counter attacks, and breakers. Plus, multiple fighting arenas pay homage to classic games, bonus rounds, distinct soundtracks for each stage, stage selection in versus mode, and complete character story arcs with intermissions and even ending animations. (Yes, it’s that impressive!)

Dev Notes JUNE 2025: This video also details another update for the C64 version, now titled ‘SNK vs CAPCOM – Stronger Edition’, as well as a version for the C128. This edition adds 16 new fighters to the roster, bringing the total to 32. Currently, it’s in alpha stage—only one backdrop is set and a few elements are left to finalize, but the game is nearly complete. There are some gameplay changes from the standard edition in this update as well.

  • Code: Gianluca Alberico
  • Music: Aldo Chiummo
  • Graphics: Gianluca Alberico, JonEgg of Genesis Project
  • The game utilizes a new type of cartridge, Magic Desk 2 (MD2). To play, you’ll need a modded version of the VICE emulator, along with the CRT game files. The game is available for free download on Dropbox.
