Indie Retro News: Alien 3

Well, here’s something I didn’t expect to see today, an adaptation of Alien 3 for the Amstrad CPC Plus! Decades after Probe Software released it back in the 90’s for the C64, this project ports the Commodore 64 version over to Amstrad’s enhanced 8-bit hardware. Rather than offering a standard, sluggish port, the creators have given the game a visual identity of its own. Utilizing the Amstrad Plus’s specialized hardware sprite capabilities, it renders Ellen Ripley, the Xenomorphs, stage Guardians, and weapon bursts cleanly on screen. These sprites operate on a dedicated palette completely detached from the background scenery, allowing for beautiful contrast while the action glides smoothly across the screen via fine hardware pixel scrolling.

The upgrade extends into the audio and gameplay mechanics as well, across fifteen action-packed stages. Players must navigate the hostile colony to track down and liberate hidden prisoners, ultimately battling enemies at the end of distinct, objective-driven missions. To keep players immersed, the original Commodore 64 soundtrack has been adapted for the Amstrad’s AY chip sound generator, while explosive sound effects are driven entirely through the advanced ASIC DMA hardware. Survival relies on careful resource management as well; players have just one chance to complete the mission, requiring them to constantly monitor a static HUD displaying health, ammunition, a motion tracking radar, and a strict countdown timer where scrounging for a fresh battery could mean the difference between life and death.
