In the classic TV show Gilligan’s Island, which follows seven castaways stranded on an island, there are two versions of the theme song. The first version only names five of the castaways, leaving out The Professor and Mary Ann. The actors playing these roles were offended, so a second version of the song was created that includes them. This change only adds three syllables, making it unclear why this was so important. I mention this anecdote because it relates to the final episode of Secret Level, titled “Playstation”, which has little to do with the actual Playstation until Kratos from God of War makes an appearance.
The setting of the episode is a futuristic city where Courier O delivers packages on her bike. References to actual Playstation games are sparse until she receives a mysterious package. The inclusion of characters like Helldivers and Sackboy from Little Big Planet may not be recognizable to viewers who are unfamiliar with these games. The episode lacks a cohesive theme and feels lazy in its execution. While the animation is decent, the story is generic and fails to engage the audience. It would have been more impactful to give individual episodes to God of War and Shadow of the Colossus instead of including them as background elements.
