That’s right! Thanks to the remarkable talent of coder h0ffman, the classic Metal Gear has stealthily made its way onto the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis, brimming with retro charm, chiptune magic, and an impressive level of detail.

Originally released in 1987 on the MSX2 and created by the legendary Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear initiated a celebrated stealth-action franchise. However, while NES gamers received a… unique interpretation of the title, the authentic MSX2 version had never appeared on a Sega console—until now.

Meet h0ffman, the coding guru who reverse-engineered the original game, meticulously rebuilding it so it runs natively on Mega Drive hardware. Expect full sound and music via the YM2612 chip, smooth scrolling, and visuals that fit perfectly on a CRT display.

You can:

  • Download the ROM (here) to play on real hardware or via an emulator.
  • Explore the development blog (here) for some fascinating technical details.
  • Support the project (and future ports?!) through his itch.io.

This isn’t merely a port—it’s a what-if scenario where Metal Gear launched on Sega’s 16-bit console back in the day. And honestly? It’s fantastic.

So, fire up your EverDrive or preferred emulator and prepare to infiltrate Outer Heaven in Mega Drive style. Just remember: this is a stealth mission.
