Celebrating America’s timeless arcade classic, available on consoles and PC.
So, looks like we’re diving into Incredible Technologies arcade emulation, huh? You know what that means, right?
ARCADE ARCHIVES
Super Basketball
- Platform: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch (available worldwide)
- Price: $7.99 / €6.99 / £6.29
- Publisher: Hamster / Konami
What’s it about? A vertically-scrolling basketball game from Konami, first released in arcades in 1984. It was later included in the Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits for Nintendo DS in 2007. Players must work their way back in one-minute matches, starting with a challenging score deficit against their opponent.
Why should I check it out? If you’re interested in seeing the roots of Double Dribble or simply want to experience the best basketball simulation of 1984.
Fun Fact: This game was marketed in Japan as a new evolution in Konami’s sports franchise initiated by Hyper Olympic/Track & Field, although the anticipated arcade hockey follow-up never happened.
G-MODE ARCHIVES
- Platform: Nintendo Switch (Japan only)
- Price: ¥1000
- Publisher: G-MODE / Studio Runba
What’s this game? A follow-up to the popular RPG Maou ga Ochiru Hi, created by Studio Runba and originally launched for Japanese feature phones in 2008. Players have a year to gather and prepare for the return of a powerful demon lord, battling through quick encounters and triggering various events to secure one of many possible outcomes.
Why should I care? While I can’t provide personal experience on the differences from the first installment, G-MODE suggests this sequel is larger and enhanced. Given the trend with sequels, I’m inclined to believe them. The original Maou ga Ochiru Ni is one of my favorites from the G-MODE Archives series due to its compact format that perfectly suits modern gaming.
Fun Fact: You might recognize Studio Runba’s visual style; they also worked on other visually distinctive Jaleco mobile adaptations, such as City Connection Rocket and Momoko 1200%.
PLAYSTATION PREMIUM
July ’25 update: Twisted Metal 3 & Twisted Metal 4 (PlayStation)
What are these games? Main entries #3 and #4 in Sony’s classic vehicular combat series Twisted Metal, initially developed by 989 Studios for the PlayStation in 1998 and 1999. I think Rob Zombie’s “Dragula” features in one of them, but I’m not sure which!
Why should I take interest? If you’re nostalgic for classic PlayStation titles, these games definitely deserve a look. Personally, I grew up on Vigilante 8.
Any thoughts? Has anyone watched that streaming series adaptation of Twisted Metal? I heard it got renewed for another season, which might suggest it’s gained popularity, but I take streaming platforms’ claims with a grain of salt.
OTHER
- Platform: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PC via Steam (globally available)
- Price: $29.99 or equivalent
- Publisher: Atari
What’s included? A compilation of eight titles from the renowned Golden Tee arcade golf series by Incredible Technologies, launching from 1995 to 2001. This collection allows gameplay with virtual trackball controls adapted for various inputs, including touchscreen and controllers, along with a practice mode and a mulligan feature.
Which games are featured? Included are titles like Golden Tee 3D Golf, Golden Tee ’97, Golden Tee ’98, Golden Tee ’99, Golden Tee 2K, and Golden Tee Classic, as well as World Class Bowling and ShuffleShot.
Why should I check this out? Golden Tee has remained a staple in North American arcades, reflecting its lasting impact on the gaming landscape. As someone outside North America, I’m not qualified to assess its historical value in person, but I do suspect it could resonate with communities that cherish traditional arcade gaming.
Tip: A physical version is set for release in October; a great gift idea for anyone not fully engaged with digital gaming.
PLUG & PLAY / “MINI” CONSOLES & ACCESSORIES
Taito’s Egret II Mini desktop arcade replica has surprisingly skyrocketed in popularity (especially in Japan), driving up resale prices for both the base unit and its various expansion modules. As these products have limited print runs and the demand is exceptionally high, it’s wise to consider ordering any new or older expansion packs before they sell out. The upcoming expansion pack promises games from Technos Japan and Data East, including Mysterious Stones: Dr.Kick no Daibouken, Double Dragon, and more!
