Multiplayer Battle Mode Introduced in ModRetro Tetris

Mutliplayer Battle Mode added to ModRetro Tetris

The ModRetro Chromatic is primarily a standalone device; however, the Cart Clinic software allows for firmware updates. This includes updates for ModRetro games. Recently, ModRetro introduced a new feature, Battle Mode, for ModRetro Tetris—the bundled software that comes on its own cartridge. While ModRetro Tetris previously offered multiplayer options like marathon, ultra, sprint, and endless modes based on time limits, Battle Mode sets itself apart by challenging players with “garbage” lines sent to them when they clear lines on their boards. This feature is reminiscent of various Tetris iterations throughout the years but is making its debut in this version.

The concept of Cart Clinic seems somewhat contrary to ModRetro’s usual aim. As noted in my prior review of the Chromatic hardware, the device’s charm lies in its minimal requirement for internet connectivity and technical prowess when it comes to game formatting. Users can enjoy the Chromatic fully without ever using Cart Clinic; the games will simply remain in their initial 1.0 version.

Personally, I share the widely held belief that post-launch updates have negatively impacted gaming, as they allow developers to release incomplete products and fix issues later. Upon hearing about Cart Clinic, I couldn’t help but think of Chantey, a game I was eager to enjoy, but it was plagued with bugs and confusing scripting, making it feel rushed. However, knowing there’s now an extensive 1.1 revision prompts me to consider giving it another try. In the meantime, I find it hard to criticize Cart Clinic for adding a fresh feature to ModRetro Tetris.
