While I tend not to feature hardware anymore, I just had to give a shout out to Retro Games Ltd, as they have announced a partnership with Atari to release THE 800XL, a full-sized hardware recreation of the iconic 1980’s 8-bit home computer. Scheduled to launch on April 23, 2027, this upcoming system honors the trailblazing machine that originally introduced millions of households to video gaming, early programming, and creative coding. Built to capture the nostalgic magic of the classic unit, it balances historical accuracy with modern convenience. The replica boasts a fully functional mechanical keyboard, and a working cartridge slot, alongside an updated HDMI video output and 25 pre-installed classic games.
Designed as the definitive experience for veteran enthusiasts and a fresh gateway for a new generation of digital creators, THE 800XL will give users the ability to both revisit childhood software favorites and explore Atari’s legendary computing history for the very first time. Pre-orders have officially opened at a price point of £199.99 / €219.99, allowing eager fans to lock in their units ahead of the 2027 release date.
