Datasoft’s 1984 fantasy classic has un-officially made its way to the Amstrad CPC 6128 by Oldschool Is Beautiful, with the help of AI. In this newly released unofficial fan port, titled Conan: Hall of Volta (CPC), players assume the role of the legendary barbarian to conquer seven peril-filled stages spanning cavernous depths, fortified castles, treacherous skies, and the mystical domain of the dark wizard Volta himself. The ultimate objective demands retrieving three enchanted gemstones before putting a permanent end to Volta’s reign of terror. Although this game was reverse-engineered directly from the original Commodore 64 version, the core game logic has been ported instruction-by-instruction from the 6502 architecture to the CPC’s Z80 processor, ensuring that every secret layout, enemy pattern, and frame-perfect obstacle timing is comparable to the original.
While the mechanics remain unchanged, the audio and visual presentation has been re-engineered to take full advantage of the Amstrad CPC. Players are greeted by a custom 16-colour loading screen before diving into the adventure, which translates the entire classic campaign all the way through to its final endgame screen. The game’s soundscape has also received a major overhaul with it being completely rewritten to utilize the CPC’s internal AY-3-8912 sound chip. Furthermore, the developers managed to keep the game running at the exact, fluid pace of the 1984 original while optimizing the entire package to fit neatly onto a single disk side.
