Indie Retro News: Arlasoft Soccer

A legendary football game has unofficially made its way to the Commodore 64, courtesy of Arlasoft. Titled Arlasoft Soccer, the ambitious project represents the culmination of five years of planning to port the iconic Sensible Soccer to the Commodore 64. While mimicking the game’s visuals was a straightforward task, capturing the precise, unmistakable physics and player movement required deeper insight. The breakthrough came when the development team behind SWOS2020 shared a reverse-engineered C++ source code and extensive systems documentation, providing the vital technical blueprint needed to accurately replicate this classic game.

Translating code built for a 16-bit, 7MHz CPU down to a 1MHz 8-bit 6502 processor with only 64KB of RAM required massive engineering creativity. To keep the gameplay performance smooth despite intense sprite multiplexing and screen scrolling, Arlasoft relied on mathematical lookup tables rather than slow multiplication and division. Player and ball movements were restricted to alternating frames to halve the processing load, and certain systems were calculated in tile space instead of pixel space. While dense goalmouth action can still trigger minor slowdowns—mirroring the original Amiga 500 version—Also to note, Commodore 128 users can leverage the machine’s border raster speed boost to achieve virtually flawless performance.

To fit within the strict 64KB limit, sprawling features like career modes, substitutions, and licensed player names had to be cut, but the core “Sensi” gameplay remains entirely intact. Arlasoft Soccer supports PAL and NTSC formats across original hardware, VICE, MISTer, and modern clone consoles, though a minor glitch on C64 Ultimate turbo modes is currently awaiting a patch. The release comes packed with customisation options, featuring human and CPU matchups, a 16-team cup mode, penalty shoot-outs, eight distinct difficulty tiers, six tactical formations, and seven pitch types that actively alter ball physics.
