Commodore’s legacy is profound, with a loyal community that has steadfastly preserved its spirit. Initially launched as a series of home computers, the brand has since transcended expectations, evolving into a prominent figure in computing history.
Throughout the years, Commodore changed hands multiple times, much to the dismay of its enthusiasts. Some tried to revitalize the brand, while others introduced unusual products like the Commodore shredder and music player. Many simply let the brand name fade away, stuck in legal limbo.
Nevertheless, the community remained resilient. Fans actively contributed by restoring vintage hardware, crafting replicas, developing new software, and sharing their invaluable knowledge.
At long last, it appears Commodore has found promising guardians for its future.
Now under the banner of Commodore International Corporation, the brand is witnessing new leadership and ownership. Key figures from its heyday, such as Albert Charpentier and Bil Herd, have rejoined the cause, alongside co-founders Christian Simpson (from YouTube’s Retro Recipes) and Sean Donohue.
Although the deal to acquire Commodore is reportedly valued in the low seven figures, it hasn’t yet been finalized. Due to legal limitations, particularly SEC’s Rule 506(c), public investment is currently restricted. To address this, the team is implementing Y Combinator’s SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity) model while seeking funds from angel investors.
Simultaneously, they are exploring options for wider community investment, aiming to provide fans and supporters with a chance at ownership soon.
Commodore’s new motto encapsulates their commitment to preserving the brand’s legacy beautifully. They have already introduced three models of the Commodore 64 Ultimate, each inspired by the classic C64 design.

The three variants include the BASIC Beige, which mirrors the original C64 style with modern internal hardware; the Starlight Edition, featuring a sleek, transparent shell with integrated RGB lighting; and the Founders Edition, a limited collector’s model for early supporters, boasting gold-plated accents, a unique serial number (00000001), and extra premium features emphasizing its exclusivity.
