WARNING: Possible Spoilers Ahead!

The second episode of this new season of “The Last of Us,” titled “Through the Valley,” has been met with overwhelming acclaim. It delivers the dramatic moments that fans of the video game franchise anticipated.

I believe the second episode is a masterclass in episodic television. Pedro Pascal’s character, Joel, may not have many scenes, but his presence is powerful and emotional.

The third episode, titled “The Path,” introduced a slower pace, offering a thoughtful transition. I appreciated how quickly Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced) made their way to Seattle for revenge. The journey from Jackson, Wyoming to Seattle was notably brisk, and I’m engrossed in Ellie’s quest against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Joel’s killer. I’m expecting numerous surprises as the season unfolds. Much like iconic HBO series such as “Game of Thrones” and “The Sopranos,” the story keeps you guessing. So far, the writing is tight and exemplary.

The suspenseful moment in the second episode, when Abby navigated a fence while zombies attacked, was both terrifying and thrilling—one of the scariest scenes I’ve encountered recently. I haven’t played “The Last of Us: Part II,” so I’m unsure if that chilling moment originated from the game, but it was executed flawlessly on screen.

Some marketing for this season might have set misleading expectations. Many trailers prominently featured Pedro Pascal’s Joel, though he only appeared in the first two episodes, with his second episode appearance coming at the 21-minute mark.
