I don’t need to tell you that 2004 was a long time ago. Perhaps some of you reading these words cannot recall because you were born that year, but the rest of us can tell you online gaming, indie gaming, and deliberate “retro” throwbacks were extremely uncommon.
Enter Cave Story, an indie game released for free online that lovingly presented its characters and world via classic pixel art. Costing zero dollars, it spread via word of mouth as its charms proved popular around the world—especially as fan translations helped expand its reach.
Host Jeremy Parish, regular correspondent Diamond Feit, longtime friend of the show Scott Sharkey, and Patreon supporter Jeff Peterson share their memories of Cave Story and impart just how much one game can affect change.
Description: Jeremy Parish, Diamond Feit, and Scott Sharkey link up with patron Jeff Peterson to escape the island early and bring you a discussion of indie game classic Cave Story (instead of surviving Hell).
