Important information about modern displays
When using this cable to connect your Commodore to a modern LCD television—either directly or through a converter or upscaler such as a RetroTINK or OSSC—you may notice video artefacts such as checkerboarding or jailbars.
This is a common issue when modern equipment processes the Commodore’s low-resolution analogue video signal. Upscaling, noise reduction, sharpening and other image-processing techniques can make imperfections in the original signal more visible.
We have taken great care to produce a high-quality cable that minimises these artefacts as much as possible. However, the final image quality will still depend on factors such as your Commodore model, display, screen size, converter and its settings. Results may therefore vary, and the picture will probably never be completely perfect.
Then again, it wasn’t perfect 40 years ago either—and isn’t that part of why we love these old machines? 😉
Separate chroma and luma connections
If your display or video converter has separate chroma and luma inputs, you can use our optional chroma/luma splitter cable.
Compatibility with the Commodore 64 Ultimate
If you intend to use this cable with the new Commodore 64 Ultimate, we recommend purchasing our dedicated S-Video, chroma/luma, composite and stereo audio cable for the C64 Ultimate instead.
This cable was designed for original Commodore 64 models, on which pin 5 is connected to ground to suppress input noise. The Commodore 64 Ultimate uses that same pin for one of its audio channels. As a result, using this cable with the Ultimate will also force its separate audio output to mono, and only the left audio channel will be heard.
The cable is otherwise safe to use with the Commodore 64 Ultimate and will not damage it. Composite and S-Video output will work normally and provide excellent picture quality. If required, you can still use the Ultimate’s optical S/PDIF output for stereo audio.
