Indie Retro News: Turrican – The Timeless Classic Receives a New Tease for MSX1 from TheGeps!

Indie Retro News: Turrican - An all time classic game gets another MSX1 tease by TheGeps!

Over the past few months, I’ve been updating you on the exciting progress of Turrican for the MSX, developed by TheGeps, Bitcaffe, and Toni Galvez. Today, new footage has been released showcasing just how impressive this work-in-progress game looks on the MSX. For those unfamiliar with this legendary title, Turrican was debuted in 1990 by Rainbow Arts, featuring programming by Manfred Trenz and a fantastic soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck. The game combines thrilling shooting action, formidable weaponry, and engaging gameplay that continues to captivate fans.

The creator shared his excitement about the visually appealing Turrican for MSX1, now with a high-quality soundtrack by Bitcaffe (Gabriel Caffarena): “I can’t believe how much progress I’ve made on Turrican for MSX! Today, I’m excited to present a brand-new build: I’ve restructured much of the code, setting up the ROM to support the full game (pending Factor5’s approval for release). This has increased the file size to nearly 1 MB, with potential for further expansion!”

The new features to look out for in the upcoming demo on File Hunter are quite thrilling: hidden blocks now contain power-ups and additional special weapons (although some weapons and shields are still being implemented). You’ll soon be able to activate the 3-way and 5-way bullets, the phaser, and extend the rotating laser. Getting your hands on those power-ups will be more rewarding! Davide has also contributed new graphics elements, refreshing the appearance of the “eyes” and replacing my bats with his improved versions. The bat management routine has been optimized for better performance. What more can I say? Enjoy!

That’s all the latest on the game for now, but we will keep you posted as we hear more from the developer!
