Indie Retro News: Smokin' Colts

The developer recently asked us to feature their new AI game Smokin’ Colts, a new Wild West open-world game developed for the Commodore Amiga. This first person shooter drops players straight into the terrified frontier settlement of Dusty Creek, a town gripped by fear as the notorious Bart Hollis and his gang run rampant under the nose of a helpless sheriff. Stepping into the boots of a lone gunslinger, you arrive just as the gang prepares to rob the local bank. The game according to the developer features a dynamic world where you can explore a fully populated township, interact with locals, and drop into the saloon for a drink—an action that triggers a dramatic, high-noon confrontation as the outlaws ride into town. Furthermore, the game spans two huge chapters, players must choose to play as either an army captain or an Apache scout, navigating a sprawling frontier packed with reactive weather, gambling mini-games, and tactical gunfights.

Performance issues in this version

According to the developer Smokin’ Colts is built on a sector/portal engine, the game renders a fully 3D western environment complete with multi-storey buildings, sloped floors, swinging doors, and a complete 360° sky box to run entirely in fixed point math on a standard 68030 processor without requiring a Floating Point Unit (FPU). To ensure broad compatibility across various classic hardware setups, the developer has included three adjustable screen resolutions—ranging from a retro 256×160 up to a crisp 320×256 full display with an inclusive low-detail mode for more speed.
