Indie Retro News: Mappy - A C64 1 MB REU port of an Arcade classic

Double Dragons wasn’t the only Arcade classic to see a news update on IndieRetroNews, as developer charger0277 has officially released a new Commodore 64 port of Namco’s beloved 1983 hit, Mappy. Available to players as both a disk image (.d64) and a cartridge image (.crt), this latest conversion goes beyond stock hardware by requiring a 1 MB RAM Expansion Unit (REU), which can be utilized on either real hardware expansions, ultimate’s, or emulated setups. The developer built the title with global compatibility in mind; a single unified file automatically detects whether it is running on a European (PAL) or American (NTSC) system at start-up.

In this latest adaptation, players control Mappy, a brave police mouse on a mission to infiltrate a multi-story mansion and recover stolen treasures from a notorious gang of felines. The action spans six distinct floors, requiring players to bounce on trampolines to navigate between levels, utilize standard and microwave doors to stun pursuing enemies, and strategically collect pairs of matching items to maximize their bonus points. Impeding Mappy’s progress are the primary antagonists of the arcade original: the prominent red boss cat Goro (originally known as Nyamco) and his nimble crew of smaller blue Meowky cats.

  • The C64 has 64 KB for everything: program, data, graphics and screen. Smooth scrolling needs two screens, one shown while the other is prepared, and they alone take 22 KB; the program takes another 30. The REU holds the rest, about 250 KB: the houses, the music, the screens, the bonus round and pieces of the program, which come in when needed. It also copies memory by itself, about ten times faster than the processor: the whole house is drawn inside the REU, and when the screen scrolls the new rows arrive ready.
