Indie Retro News: Labyrinth of Ur

Here’s something we haven’t featured for awhile, a dungeon crawler that’s inspired by classics such as Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder! Welcome to Labyrinth of Ur, a first-person 3D dungeon crawler developed by Ursimon that was built entirely from scratch in C for unexpanded PAL machines using the help of AI. Players step into the boots of a lone warrior named Lance, who must descend through seven procedurally generated floors—ranging from cramped, maze-like chambers to massive, looming halls. Armed with a sword, Lance must navigate the depths to find colored keys, unlock heavily guarded doors, and scavenge for vital healing potions, all while gathering gold hoards to maximize their final rank on the victory screen.

Music can be a little grating at first!

The descent is far from a casual stroll, as the game introduces a real-time combat system where sleeping monsters—rendered as vibrant, multicolor sprites including goblins, skeletons, and fiends—wake up and hunt you down if you get too close. Once a creature is alerted, an on-screen alert bar begins to drain, forcing players to act within seconds or risk losing their turn to a stalking foe that can chase, stumble, or lose your trail. To aid in the claustrophobic trek, the developer has included a crucial full-screen map alongside an automap feature complete with a fog of war. Immersed in a moody atmosphere, players will need every tool at their disposal when they reach the bottom floor, where the relentless final boss, Pazuzu, blocks the exit and guarantees a fight to the absolute bitter end.
