JOTD has certainly made a name for himself in the Amiga community by going above and beyond in converting excellent arcade titles to the Amiga platform. Games like Moon Patrol, Donkey Kong, Super Bagman, Galaxian500, and Super Xevious are just a few highlights showcased on this site. It seems there’s no stopping this dedicated developer, as he recently announced his latest project: a conversion of Konami’s iconic shooter, ‘GYRUSS.’ JOTD aims to bring this classic to life on the Amiga 500 and beyond.
While details are still scarce, JOTD shared some insights on the project’s early development stage (no sound in the video). He mentioned, “This is quite a complex port since the arcade version uses two processors, and there’s no source code available.”
- – The Z80 serves as the main CPU for most functions, but…
- – The m6809 is responsible for projecting, fixing, and recalculating coordinates, creating the circular effect in Gyruss. Without it, sprite placement would be entirely off. This conversion from 6809 to 68000 will be the first to utilize my 6809to68000 converter.
- – Fortunately, the code size is manageable. Don’t ask me how the coordinate conversion works; I presume they’re using cosine/sine tables in ROM, involving some multiplication as well. As for the FPS on a real machine, it likely requires only 25 FPS, which is perfectly fine.
That’s all for now, but stay tuned for more updates!
