Indie Retro News: Hang-On Jr

It’s time for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis to get a game news story, as yosoynacho has released version 1.0 of Hang-On Jr. for the Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis. A game which first appeared as a streamlined, budget-friendly version of Sega’s iconic 1985 arcade racer designed for the lesser-powered Sega System E hardware in 1986. Despite the source material’s historical cutbacks in audio and visuals, this new port delivers performance target of a silky-smooth 60 frames per second, bringing a highly responsive arcade experience right into the living room while retaining the unique course layouts that set the Jr. edition apart from its bigger sibling.

This latest release adds quality-of-life upgrades tailored specifically for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It introduces an exclusive MD Mode that implements the beloved turbo and braking mechanics from Super Hang-On, keeping these high scores strictly separate from the traditional Arcade mode records. You will also find a treasure trove of hardware support, including analog control via the XE-1 AP, Sega Mega Mouse compatibility, PAL 50Hz optimisations, and SRAM saving to preserve high scores and custom configurations. The developer has even included a custom Z80 driver to recreate the arcade’s secondary sound chip—complete with an option to toggle it off in the dipswitch menu if you prefer.
