Only just recently I was talking to a few friends about the original David Braben’s 8-bit space combat trading simulator of Elite, and how we’ve seen a few fan based remakes appear as well as improvements and ports to different 8bit systems. But this latest news may interest you, if you have an Atari XL/XE however, as Rensoupp has released an early beta of a port from the BBC Micro to the Atari XL/XE. A version of the game you can see being played in the footage below.
Here’s the latest from the video. “This port doesn’t allow saving progress, has little sound is generally untested. It was merely an interesting dive into digital archeology. Performance on the A8 is decent even though its CPU is about 30% slower than the BBC Micro’s when using hires graphics mode. This version retains the 192 scanlines screen height of the original unlike the C64 which uses 144, a relevant parameter when drawing lines. Some optimizations and features such as reduced, flickering were backported from other versions of the game. Extra optimizations were added to reach a playable state through there is room for plenty more, requiring even more work”
Although the game is unlikely ever to be finished with the possibility of missing features, it’s still worth checking out!
