An unexpected homebrew looks to have proven that a true first-person shooter is entirely possible on the Commodore Plus/4. While “Cuthbert in Castle Wolfenstein” isn’t an official new Microdeal adventure, it takes the classic hero into entirely new territory. The story unfolds in 1943 while B. J. Blazkowicz is busy fighting Nazis upstairs. Cuthbert thinks it is the perfect moment to slip downstairs and hunt for treasure, but he quickly discovers Dr. Schabbs’ secret laboratories, heaps of stolen gold, and a lot more dangerous company than he ever bargained for.
Long time fans will find that the game begins with a nostalgic nod to Cuthbert’s classic adventures, featuring familiar stone walls, a vertical shaft, and an exit at the bottom. However, the moment you step through that initial exit, the perspective shifts dramatically into a pseudo-3D viewpoint, completely changing your predicament. Built specifically for the Plus/4, the game challenges players to survive ten intense levels beneath the fortress, navigating interconnected chambers, pillared halls, ring-shaped courtyards, galleries, and laboratory blocks. No matter how complex the maze becomes, your objective remains a classic arcade challenge: collect every single treasure chest and stay alive long enough to find the escape route to the next floor.
