The original PlayStation’s “Fantastic Four” was an absolute joy to play. In 1997, its graphics were impressive compared to other games of the era. With side-scrolling gameplay reminiscent of “Double Dragon” and “Ninja Gaiden,” the thrill of having Human Torch leading the charge and The Thing guarding the back was palpable. Human Torch’s fiery punches were a force to reckon with, while Sue Storm’s electric blue lightning proved invaluable during intense battles. I often relied on Force Power when facing large groups of enemies.
However, one downside of the Acclaim Entertainment game was the length of the stages. The Fantastic Four had to traverse extensive terrain before successfully completing a challenging level. While battling the Molemen was enjoyable, the drawn-out nature of the encounters made them less engaging, culminating in a brief showdown with The Incredible Hulk.
The highlight of the game was undoubtedly the final stage, “Is the World Doomed?” I always felt that Dr. Doom wielding a rocket launcher at that point was a bit unfair, though he looked fantastic.

I’m looking forward to “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” although the trailers haven’t quite captured my interest. The films featuring Chris Evans and Jessica Alba had a unique charm; however, they fell short of being true comic book adaptations. In “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” (2007), they seemed unsure of how to effectively utilize the Silver Surfer. I hope the new Marvel film avoids this pitfall.
As a big fan of Vanessa Kirby, I believe she’ll bring something special to Sue Storm. She shined in “Hobbs and Shaw” and delivered an exceptional performance in “Pieces of a Woman,” for which she received an Oscar nomination. Her fight scenes in “Hobbs and Shaw” were among my favorites. Plus, Pedro Pascal has a massive fanbase. I have some reservations about Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, but he impressed in “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Gladiator 2.”
