Exclusive Interview with Andreas Heldt: Insights on ‘Pilot Sports’ in Old School Gamer Magazine

Old School Gamer Magazine Exclusive: Andreas Heldt Talks 'Pilot Sports'

Old School Gamer Magazine interviews Andreas Heldt, the founder and CEO of Z-Software, about the recent launch of Pilot Sports on PS5.

About Pilot Sports:

Initially released on Nintendo Switch and PS4, and now also available on PC and Xbox One, Pilot Sports offers dynamic local multiplayer action with over 50 challenges, seven different flying machines, and vibrant island settings.

Developed by Z-Software GmbH, the PS5 version revitalizes this beloved flying party game just in time for the highly anticipated sequel, Pilot Sports 2: Wings Unleashed, which is currently in development and set to release this summer.

Old School Gamer Magazine: How was the game created?

Andreas Heldt: A few years back, we held a brainstorming session for new project ideas, during which our game designer proposed a casual flight simulation game. Being a Nintendo fan, he drew inspiration from “Pilot Wings.”

Eventually, we partnered with a developer for the original version and began working on it.

As we’re currently developing the direct sequel, we decided to launch the original game on PS5 with enhanced features and 4K graphics.

Old School Gamer Magazine: What was your involvement in this game?

Heldt: As a co-founder, I primarily oversee the organizational aspects. I was also involved in programming the game’s prototype.

Old School Gamer Magazine: How has the development process been?

Heldt: Development for the original went very smoothly. The team collaborated effectively, allowing us to complete it on time and within budget.

We were very proud of the game upon its completion, leading us to add four bonus challenges at its conclusion.

Old School Gamer Magazine: What sets this game apart?

Heldt: Pilot Sports is an enjoyable, casual flying game. While the control of the aircraft is straightforward, the challenges become progressively tougher.

Seeing players have fun with our games reminds me why we create them: to provide enjoyment and entertainment.

Old School Gamer Magazine: Which games had the most influence on this one?

Heldt: That’s an easy question: the game draws inspiration from Nintendo’s Pilot Wings series.

Old School Gamer Magazine: Were there any memorable moments during development?

Heldt: The original game was developed some time ago, but I distinctly remember: nobody fell out of an airplane! 😉

Old School Gamer Magazine: What major lessons did you learn?

Heldt: Every project teaches you something. One of the most exciting aspects is receiving player feedback on a released game. Pilot Sports was no different; we often heard players desire more freedom in gameplay.

Consequently, we’ll provide players with significantly more freedom and options in Pilot Sports 2.

Old School Gamer Magazine: Do you think it’s important to maintain older gameplay mechanics in new titles?

Heldt: It depends on whether the mechanic is central to the game and, crucially, whether it’s enjoyable. While you should always modernize gameplay, keeping fun mechanics is valuable if they fit well.

Old School Gamer Magazine: In a crowded marketplace, how do you differentiate your game?

Heldt:That’s a challenging question.

On one hand, we aim to develop games that prioritize player enjoyment. On the other, we’re continuously producing series that incorporate player feedback, enhancing the experience with each sequel. Players can enjoy sequels that build on previous elements while offering an improved experience.

We consistently learn from player feedback and strive to launch our games on various platforms. Such insights make it easier to enhance future games.

Pilot Sports is no exception; we take its strong gameplay and refine it for Pilot Sports 2.

Ultimately, the most critical goal is ensuring fun for the players!

Old School Gamer Magazine: How have your past industry experiences influenced this game?

Heldt:Our team gains new insights with every project. Internal processes and teamwork get better over time, and we accumulate valuable development experience, including improved tools.

With years of experience, we recognize more efficient ways to work. Coupling that with a commitment to enhance gameplay allows us to stay on the right path.

Old School Gamer Magazine: How would you like this game to be remembered?

Heldt:I hope players recall our earlier games fondly and think about the fun they had. I also hope it encourages them to explore our new titles.

Old School Gamer Magazine: What can we expect next?

Heldt:Our team is actively working on “Pilot Sports 2: Wings Unleashed,” where we’re enhancing gameplay and introducing new features. We hope to share more details soon.

We are excited for its completion, as we’ve had a blast during playtests.

Old School Gamer Magazine: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Heldt:Enjoy our games!
