Twintris Deluxe: A Review from Indie Retro News

Indie Retro News: Twintris Deluxe

If you were a fan of the classic 1984 game Tetris, you’ll be happy to hear that the newest Tetris-style game ‘Twintris Deluxe’ by Trex is now available for download. This deluxe version is a major improvement over the original game released in 2001 by Megastyle, which was described as “very spartan and still fairly immature.” To complement this release, we have all the details about the game, along with gameplay footage showcasing this 1 to 2 player Tetris clone in action.

According to the game’s nfo file, here’s a summary: “Twintris is a 1 or 2 player Tetris clone that was originally released by Megastyle in 2001. The previous version, compared to the Deluxe edition now available, was basic and lacked many features. Players must rotate falling blocks in 90-degree increments and move them left or right to create complete horizontal rows at the bottom of the screen with minimal gaps. When a row is completed, it disappears.”

“Rows above the completed row move down, creating more space on the playing field. Clearing multiple rows at once gives the player a higher score. Blocks in the game don’t follow realistic physics, staying in their landing positions instead of falling over due to gravity. Rows moving up don’t fill gaps below, making it more challenging to complete lower rows. The game speed increases as more rows are cleared, and the game ends when the remaining rows reach the top or time runs out.”

Changes:

  • Added 3 new modes: battle, versus, and deluxe
  • Deluxe mode includes 19 newly designed levels
  • Sprites added to indicate winner, loser, and new high score
  • Highscore feature allows players to enter initials and save to disk
  • Improvements to the random routine
  • Players can select the order of pieces in battle or versus mode
  • Rotation of pieces allowed on both sides of the player’s table
  • Alternative hires font and sound interface device (SID) added
