Sony developed the PlayStation Portable (PSP), a handheld game console. It was announced at E3 in 2003 and showcased to the public in May 2004. The PSP was launched in Japan on December 12, 2004, and in North America on March 24, 2005. As part of the seventh generation of video game handhelds, the PSP primarily competed with the Nintendo DS.

In 1995, Sony entered the U.S. and European console markets with the original PlayStation, offering superior graphics and multimedia capabilities. This included models that could play Blu-ray discs. Recognizing an opportunity in the handheld market, Sony set out to rival Nintendo. In 2003, while Nintendo was transitioning from the Game Boy Advance to a new generation, Sony introduced the PlayStation Portable (PSP) to position itself as a strong competitor in the handheld gaming industry.
