Attention all Commodore 64 owners! An exciting announcement has been made for you. The latest port of ‘Super Amok’ for the Commodore 64 is now available thanks to developer @joeyvc64. This version is a C64 port of the VIC-20 Berzerk clone of Super Amok by Roger Merritt from 1983. We have a brief overview of the game along with a gameplay video to share with you.
The developer shares some insights about the process: “After working on Mars Patrol, I delved into using hardware sprite multiplexer and eventually became interested in implementing it using soft sprites through characters. It was quite challenging, but after numerous attempts, I managed to create a working soft sprite library. This led me to the idea of porting Super Amok to the C64 using software sprites only. I want to give credit to Roger Merrit, the original author of the game, who created it in just 8K, 42 years ago! Simply amazing!”
“I extracted the graphics from the ROM file to maintain the original look and feel. The gameplay remains unchanged. I put in a lot of effort to stay true to the VIC-20 game. For sound effects, I utilized a SFX sound driver by 4mat. I admit my limitations in working with the SID. This project was enjoyable, and I already have ideas for further improvements. Stay tuned for potential updates or new projects in the future!”
