Exciting news for fans of the Scorpion Engine! A new demo update has emerged for the arcade shooter ‘Rex and the Galactic Plague’ by Hoyster Games, featuring music from Matt McGuire. The developer shares, “Just for fun, I’ve been making my own Amiga game in Scorpion Engine, inspired by a project I wanted to create using SEUCK back in 1992!” While the developer is enjoying the process, the full game is set for release in late 2025. Below is the latest demo footage.
Here’s a sneak peek from the description: “REX, a remote exo-containment unit, is on a critical mission to retrieve a life-saving vaccine from the ruins of the Thoros Foundation. The Amorni foes are closing in as the virus spreads, leading to intense battles as Rex inches closer to the objective…”
- Navigate through various zones, from crumbling facilities to asteroid fields
- Complete ground and space missions using only your skills and top-notch Space Corps gear
- Experience multiple endings and alternative routes
- Unravel the Amorni’s plan to eliminate all life
“Will Rex complete the mission before life on Earth is extinguished?”
DEMO UPDATE: The developer has released the latest demo, correcting memory issues that caused crashes on specific configurations. As long as you have 1MB, it should work smoothly! With the game nearing its completion, this final demo brings together all major enhancements made since the previous version.
What’s new in this final demo?
- The previous two demo versions are combined; this final version includes the first three complete levels.
- The weapons system has been revamped, introducing nine unique weapons (some available in the demo).
- New defensive items grant Rex additional survival chances, though they’re now rarer, so use them strategically.
- The HUD has been enhanced to avoid game pauses when loading boss health bars.
- All story and presentation screens have been redone for a better narrative flow.
- A high-score table tracks your best scores or field ranks, as per Space Corps tradition!
The developer notes, “There’s still a lot to accomplish. The second half of the game requires further playtesting, and I’m working to ensure smooth performance on the A500+ model (mine is from the Cartoon Classics bundle, if you’re curious). This will likely be the final demo as I prepare for a full release in late 2025.”
