This month has brought some fantastic news for gamers, with popular titles like Ghosts’n’Goblins AGA, Frogger RX, OutRun Arcade, RallyXSE, and Donkey Kong Arcade making waves in the community. Now, there’s another game on the horizon that is sure to excite fans – an upcoming Arcade-like version of ‘Defender’ for the Atari ST by Sark02. This work-in-progress port of the 6809E Williams Defender sources runs at a smooth 50hz. If you were a fan of Defender in the past, be sure to check out the corresponding footage below!
Here’s the latest update: “I’ve ported the 6809E Williams Defender sources from the HistoricalSource repository on GitHub https://github.com/Historicalsource/Defender to the Atari ST, running at 50Hz and requiring at least 1MB of RAM. The game’s algorithms and gameplay are courtesy of Eugene Jarvis, Sam Dicker, and others. If it captures the essence of Defender, credit goes to them. If not, blame me. This is a work-in-progress, with current implementations of Landers, Mutants, and UFOs as enemies. The game restarts at the end with no attract mode or high-score table yet.”
Extra Notes: This version supports DMA samples on STEs with 2MB+ of RAM or YM2149 samples on STEs and STs with 1MB RAM. STEs with DMA sound will experience less choppiness when the screen is busy. Most STE samples are at 12.5kHz, with a few at 25kHz where noticeable improvements were made, although not all due to exceeding 2MB of RAM.”
