Old School Gamer Magazine Exclusive: Paul Zimmerman Talks The Video Game Summit

Old School Gamer Magazine talks with renowned competitive gamer and promoter of The Video Game Summit, Paul Zimmerman, about what makes this year’s event truly unique.

*Note from the writer: Patrick Hickey Jr. will be attending The Video Game Summit as a special guest this year.

Old School Gamer Magazine: What sets this year’s Video Game Summit apart?

Paul Zimmerman: We have more special guests than ever before, including arcade and game designers, artists, authors, YouTubers, and restorers. This year features new panels—one every hour! We also have exciting tournaments, including my Kaboom! 44th Anniversary tournament, as well as raffles, a free play area, arcade games from Galloping Ghost Arcade and Headless Horseman, and a variety of vendors at a new location. I’m involved in organizing both the special guests and the tournaments.

Old School Gamer Magazine: Who are some of the guests attending this year?

Zimmerman: You’re here, as well as myself! Joining us will be Mr. Wright Way (YouTuber), Jeffrey Wittenhagen (author), Todd Tuckey (owner of TNT Amusements celebrating 45 years!), Warren Davis (game designer), Jeff Lee (game designer and artist), Paul Niemeyer (artist), Doug Watson (artist and game designer), Garry Kitchen, Dan Kitchen, and David Crane from Audacity/Activision, along with some surprises!

Old School Gamer Magazine: Will there be any notable vendors?

Zimmerman: All our vendors are exceptional! Don’t forget, all special guests will have tables selling merchandise and signing autographs. Todd Tuckey will mingle with attendees and sign his trading cards. I’ll also have my trading cards available for free signature. So, in a way, our special guests double as special vendors!

Old School Gamer Magazine: What else is happening at the event this year?

Zimmerman: This year, we’re introducing panels every hour and varied tournaments. I’ll be hosting the Paul Zimmerman’s Atarimania: Kaboom! 44th Anniversary high score tournament at the Activision/Audacity booth—perfect for showing off your skills in front of David Crane! The grand prize is Dan Kitchen’s Casey’s Gold! The free play area features different games each year, and we’ll have arcade games from Galloping Ghost and Headless Horseman. As they say, who knows what rare games could be available?

Old School Gamer Magazine: In summary, why should someone attend the convention this year?

Zimmerman: This is the perfect chance to buy video games and related items, participate in panels (some will include Q&A), meet special guests, get autographs, and enjoy free tournaments and a free play arcade area. Don’t miss out on playing games from Galloping Ghost and Headless Horseman!

Old School Gamer Magazine: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Zimmerman: I look forward to seeing you there!

Old School Gamer Magazine: Where can people find more information?

Zimmerman: Visit videogamesummit.net for more details.
