Thunder Castle is a 1986 maze video game for the Intellivision. Players control a knight through three mazes, defeating enemies to progress. To defeat enemies, the knight must interact with objects in the maze before engaging with them.
Created by David Warhol, Thunder Castle was originally intended to be released by Mattel Electronics in 1984. However, the company closed its electronics division, and the game was eventually released in 1986 through mail order by INTV, a company specialized in Intellivision games following Mattel Electronics’ closure.
The game received praise from publications such as Computer Entertainer and Allgame, with Dave Beuscher hailing it as one of the best Intellivision games.
In Thunder Castle, players guide the knight using the Intellivision direction disc to navigate mazes and defeat dragons, sorcerers, and demons. Various magical objects scattered throughout the maze help energize the knight to defeat these monsters. The game consists of three themed dungeons—forest, castle, and dungeon—with increasing difficulty as enemies move faster in subsequent rounds. Energizing the knight temporarily allows the player to defeat a monster in the maze. However, players must avoid monsters when not energized to prevent losing lives.
The objective of Thunder Castle is to achieve a high score by slaying monsters in the maze until running out of lives due to interacting with monsters when not energized.
