Many of you may recall the classic isometric games from the 1980s, such as Batman and Head Over Heels by Ocean Software. These beloved titles were available on systems like the Amstrad, ZX Spectrum, and even saw a recent remake for the MSX2. Here’s some exciting news for fans: according to Saberman, Batman is now playable on the Sinclair QL. As noted by the creator, “Jon Ritman’s iconic 1986 game is now available for the retro computer Sinclair QL, thanks to a remake by Joan Gayón, which can be downloaded for free in various versions for both the original machine and the assembly language emulator developed from scratch.”
Here’s a bit of insight into the project. “I began this initiative in late 2020 to showcase the capabilities of a computer that lacked engaging software and wasn’t given much attention in this area. Initially, my goal was to create just a ‘technical demo’ of my favorite childhood game. However, as the coding became increasingly intricate, I realized I needed to build practically EVERYTHING just to create a small demo featuring a couple of Batman screens. Once I got started, I was determined to prove that it was indeed possible. Little did I know about the challenges that awaited me. It reminded me of a movie where a character says that after overcoming one problem, you must be ready to tackle the next—and so it goes until everything is resolved.”
